The Government Sector
There are 45,000 public bodies across Great Britain covered by Disability Equality Duty (DED).Many of these should have produced and published Disability Equality Schemes by 4th December 2006.
The DED is meant to ensure that all public bodies - such as central or local government, schools, health trusts or emergency services pay due regard to the promotion of equality for disabled people in every aspect of their service provision.
Central government authorities, the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly all had to produce a disability equality scheme by December 2006. There is also a new duty for certain Secretaries of State and Scottish ministers from 2008 to publish a report on disability equality every three years.
Be it at a local or national level, most government organisations are making reasonable adjustments to ensure they are accessible to disabled customers. But the unpredictable levels of demand and the speed at which information becomes outdated means that a fine line has to be drawn between holding enough stock to supply demand and not overprinting stock which will become obsolete once the publication is revised.
