What is Braille?
If you were unable to see, touch would become your major sense. The sense of touch is used by many people with serious sight problems to digest information.
Braille is the medium most people think of first. It was invented by Louis Braille, a Frenchman, born in 1809 who himself was blind from the age of three. In later life, a musician and teacher of the blind, he devised the Braille system of writing, consisting of raised dots that can be interpreted by touch. Each dot or group of dots represents a letter, numeral or punctuation mark.
The dots are embossed upon a ‘carrier medium’ commonly card or plastic but often these days, thanks to modern embossing technology, plain paper as well.
